Jolly Phonics

Across the Foundation Phase, we teach phonics through the Jolly Phonics scheme. The Jolly Phonics’ scheme teaches children through songs and includes actions that link with each sound.  Why not practice them at home too?

We do not only use these songs and actions during Phonic time, they also help us to read AND write! When we are writing, we segment the word into its individual sounds. For example cat> c-a-t,  shop > sh-o-p,  strong > s-t-r-o-ng. The children can segment the words orally and then use their actions and songs to help them find the sound on the corresponding sound mat (see below) to help them write. It is incredible how the children can apply this knowledge when reading and writing! When writing at home, try and have these available for your child when they are spelling new words and see them progress.

High Frequency Words / Tricky Words

In addition to sounds, children will also be learning to read ‘tricky words’. These are words that cannot be broken down into their known sounds. Children will need to learn to sight read these words and spell them correctly. We practise these on a daily basis with the children and have them on display for them to use when writing. It is also important that your child can recognise and read the tricky words in a sentence too – as this is where we find they find it difficult to apply their word knowledge. They may be able to sight read the word on its own, but when it is in a sentence and a different context, the children tend to forget that they have already learnt the word. Please practise these at home too and see if they can find the words in books!

Handwriting

In Year 2, children are taught to join cursive handwriting. This is where every letter starts on the line and also leads out. When writing, we strongly encourage that you practice the right formation with your child at home too. You can see the expected letter formations below.
